Bata Publishes its Sustainability Review of 2016

The Bata Life Sustainability Review 2016 complements our online Bata Life web pages – www.batalife.com –  which we launched in 2015 and is regularly updated. This Review takes a snapshot of our business today and the steps we are taking toward being a sustainable business. The content covers 2014 and 2015 and, unless otherwise stated, the data relates to the period from 1st January to 31st December 2015.

What we have tried to do in this Review, is set out a framework for reporting, to assist our employees and stakeholders in understanding how we organize and manage the risks and opportunities linked to sustainability issues throughout our value chain. From 2016, we will begin the process of formally assessing our most material issues to manage and report on. We will move to an annual reporting cycle, and we will work towards aligning our disclosures in line with the internationally recognized reporting framework developed by the Global Reporting Initiative.
Looking to 2016 and beyond, we will continue to ensure that sustainability becomes an integral part of Bata’s business strategy, decision-making and disclosures. This will not be about honoring our great heritage and extending our legacy; we recognize that, as a multinational company, we have a broader responsibility to harness our global networks and expertise and the passion of our people to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and climate solutions.

Paris, the most “liked” city in the world on Facebook, has long been a host to the international Bata brand. On 16 October 2013, the newest Parisian Bata shop opened next to Charles de Gaulle airport, one of the busiest in the world. Now you can step into fashion as soon as you step off the plane!

In a metropolis where brands have to work hard to distinguish themselves, Bata is continuing to bring high fashion at an affordable price to millions of Parisians and visitors. At this cosmopolitan crossroads of the latest styles, a new Bata store is a new opportunity to find that perfect pair of shoes!

Showcasing style and trends

No two Bata shops are the same. In its exclusive Paris airport store, Bata presents fashion, French-style. Whether you prefer leather, fur, high or flat heels, classical or quirky, the whole Bata universe is right there. Wear your Batas to stroll the streets of Paris, climb the steps of the Eiffel Tower, or take a break at one of the city’s numerous sidewalk cafés. Bata is an invitation to discover Paris. The City of Light is also the City of Bata!

Paris-Nairobi: A direct flight to the capital of Kenya

A truly unique Bata shop. The largest Bata shop in Africa has opened in the mega-city of Nairobi. The “Tom Mboya Mega,” the country’s 128th shop, was inaugurated on 22 November 2013. Designed over several levels, the different floors are connected by escalators. It is a city within a city!

Bata in Nairobi: A space for fashion and for family

Thanks to the expansive size of the shop, the choice of styles has never been greater. The Nairobi mega-store allows Bata to showcase all the “must-haves” of its collections, from chunky wedges to the latest sports shoes. And, to make the shopping experience even more pleasurable, there’s even a special area dedicated to children. While you browse the Bata collections, your kids can watch their favorite TV shows or play games in a safe and secure space.

“With two floors totalling 6000 sq ft, this is by far the largest Bata store in Africa,” says Alberto Errico, Bata Kenya Company Manager. “The opening of Bata Tom Mboya Mega is a great step towards our goal of opening more large-format stores that allow us to distinctly showcase all our brands. I thank the team that tirelessly worked to make this happen.”

Bata Announces Sponsorship Deal with e-Sports Team

Bata Brands is thrilled to announce its sponsorship agreement with eXeS eSport, one of the most promising e-Sports teams in Europe, and for our company to be involved with the exciting world of professional video game competition, widely known as e-Sports.

eXeS eSport is a French Electronic Sports Association founded in 2008. eXeS eSport has four teams participating in popular games such as League of Legends, Counter-Strike, ShootMania and Call of Duty. The team finished second in the European Gaming League’s EGL8 in 2012 and went on to win the EGL9 in 2013. That same year, they also won the Gears of War: Judgment Cup in France. In 2014, eXeS eSport won the EuroCup CS:GO and finished second at the Gamers Assembly and the Lanex 18. They will be participating in the 2014 Electronic Sports World Cup (ESWC) taking place in October in Paris.

Thomas J. Bata’s Autobiography on Audiobook and Google Books

To celebrate its 120-year anniversary, Bata is proud to be able to make available once again Thomas J. Bata’s out-of-print autobiography, Shoemaker to the World, in multiple digital formats. Eloquently told and rich in anecdotes, the book is a compelling chronicle of the many challenges, traumatic events and great successes that comprised the author’s colorful life.

Beginning with the Bata family’s humble beginnings in a Moravian village, Thomas Bata goes on to describe his entrepreneurial upbringing, his fight for control of the family enterprise, his unique partnership with his wife, and the way he went about implementing his business philosophy. It is one of the great success stories of the twentieth century.

Bata – The Leading Shoe Brand in India

You might be surprised to learn that Bata is the most popular shoe brand in India. Ahead of Adidas, ahead of Reebok and Puma. According to a 2013 study of “India’s Most Attractive Brands” by the Trust Research Advisory (TRA), Bata is the shoe brand that India loves best. And in that same study, Bata came in eleventh out of ALL brands ­– including automotive, technology and food. This amazing vote of confidence reflects a long and deeply rooted relationship.

Flashback: Bata Flies High with Singapore Airlines

Attractive black pumps, custom-designed by Bata for the airline, completed the crisp, professional look of the jacket and mid-calf skirt worn by the flight attendants from 1947 to 1956. The soft leather upper and wide, low heel provided comfort and stability as the hostesses moved about the cabin of the propeller planes of the time. The custom pump has proven an enduring style. Today’s Bata Samantha with its slightly rounded toe and similar wide heel is highly reminiscent of this classic look.

As Malayan Airways grew and times changed, Bata adapted with the airline. The introduction of turbo-prop airplanes led to more flights per day and, with the introduction of international routes, longer times spent in the air. Comfortable clothes and shoes for the cabin crews became even more important.


Bata Publishes its First Sustainability Review of 2014

Bata today publishes its first Sustainability Review which charts the Company’s extraordinary journey over 120 years to becoming one of the world’s most respected footwear brands. The Review, which has been written for its employees, customers and other stakeholders, explains how Bata’s principles of respect, vision, responsibility and entrepreneurship have driven a dynamic enterprise that is dedicated to making great shoes accessible to everyone.

The Sustainability Review describes how Bata’s heritage and its enduring ability to think long-term has, since the early 20th century, enabled Bata to enter and create new markets, set up Bata villages to support employees, invest in local communities and develop local sourcing and distribution options. This innate sense of responsibility has driven a ‘multi-local’ approach where Bata is known throughout the world as a local company, despite it being the world’s largest footwear company. Bata explains that aside from being a fashion item, shoes for many people are vital to protecting against disease, improving mobility, providing comfort, and ensuring safety. Furthermore, by building its manufacturing base in the countries where its sells its shoes, Bata has expanded the definition of who needs shoes to include the children who are educated in its schools, the entrepreneurs who have built businesses around distribution and recycling facilities, the small businesses that have grown up alongside its factories, the families who have benefited from its high standards of employee welfare, and the young people around the world who are supported through the Bata Children’s Program.

As an international Company operating in more than 60 countries and employing more than 30,000 employees in retail stores, production facilities and offices around the world, Bata acknowledges the scale of its responsibility to sustain livelihoods, grow businesses and enrich communities. As such, it has identified 18 sustainability commitments which support its goal for every shoe it sells to be designed by Bata and for every aspect of its manufacture and sales to be carefully controlled.

Bata plans to publish regular updates for its stakeholders to help them stay informed about its sustainability progress.

Bata Children’s Program

The Bata Children’s Program, launched in 2011, is Bata employees’ volunteer-led community initiative that focuses on helping disadvantaged children in the communities where Bata is present.

Bata’s heritage 7-story store on Wenceslas Square in Prague was specially built by the Bata company in 1928.

Today, thousands of Bata stores across the world share design expertise with our flagship stores, like the ones in Prague or New Delhi.
